ELR Software produces computer programs designed by speech pathologists for speech, language & literacy intervention. Our programs may be used interactively within therapy sessions, to increase efficiency in service delivery, and to improve access to the Internet for people with special needs. We are also available as consultants to clinicians and research projects in the fields of literacy and accessibility issues associated with the Internet.

The aim of this newsletter is to inform you of developments and changes to our major products eLr (Extra Language Resources) and Word Meanings. We welcome the opportunity for feedback and questions, and will be pleased to consider including reader contributions and announcements.

This Newsletter (and previous editions) as well as a "print-ready" PDF version of the current edition is available online at www.elr.com.au/news. An email version is also sent monthly to members of our mailing list (See Subscribing/Unsubscribing).

  1. Using eLr in Teletherapy - Free Webinars

  2. Given the unprecedented demand for clinicians to be using teletherapy, we are offering free, customised webinars to assist any individuals or groups who'd like learn (or share) more information.

For existing subscribers the focus of such a session will likely be what platforms and methods are useful, and tips and tricks to get the most from eLr in clinical sessions. For new subscribers, and any one who has recently discovered the eLr "free trials", there'll be additional concentration on the content of eLr - what's in there, how do I locate it, and how do I effectively deliver sessions to my client families and schools?

If you'd like to participate in such a webinar, please email expressing your interest. Let us know in general terms what you'd like to cover, and your current experience level with eLr and teleplatform(s). Please also include some dates and/or times that would suit you best, and we'll respond with some possible options.

  3. Changes in eLr to Improve Teletherapy Delivery

  4. Many subscribers have already found that different platforms provide more or less effective "shared screen control" depending on whether they are hosted from a computer (Windows/Mac/Chromebook) with keyboard/mouse or touch screen, and shared by a client also using a computer or tablet device (iPad or Android). We put a summary of our experiences on these combinations at www.facebook.com/108322200852013. Two things stood out in our investigations: computer to computer is generally the best for platforms, and, if the client is using a touch device, "shared dragging" is typically not possible.

Several eLr activities use "dragging" to move items about the screen, and we've implemented a "teleplatform fix" in which a "click/touch" is used to select the appropriate item, followed by a second, separate "click/touch" at the target location. This achieves the same intention and will work in situations where "drag" is not available.

Also, based on user feedback and request, we've implemented 2 further additions to eLr to make the free "Guest" mechanism more useful for families doing home practice:

    1. The powerful 0504 model "YourWords" is now included in the "Guest" directory (it was previously only in the registered user's "Clinicians Toolbox"). This model allows users to enter (eg paste) any word list or sentences to create their own "WordSearch", "LookThenCover", "SmileyMan", "MemoryWords", "ConnectWords", or "Typing with Words" activity using just the entered words.
    2. All eLr tasks which have any word content now display those words in their "Help-Task content" tab. Clinicians may easily copy the words into client notes, other resources, or email etc to be transferred to clients for further practice activities (such as "YourWords" just referred to).

Unfortunately none of these improvements could be added to the current (May 2020) iPad App version of eLr-Offline since Apple has placed a temporary halt on our update process due to some unresolved changes in Apple's requirements. We're still working on solutions to this, but in the meantime we recommend "Guest" access via the eLr web site which will work on any device they may have, including all modern computers, tablets and even smart phones.

  5. Other Independent Developers

  6. As an occasional feature of this Newsletter, we include simple, unpaid announcements of products developed by other small, independent developers, who, like ourselves, are practising clinicians who have put their ideas and experience into resource materials for general distribution. Links and brief information about these sites may be found at www.elr.com.au/links/developers.htm. To date we have listed -

If you would like your materials listed on this page (at no charge), please contact us.

  7. Free Downloads

  8. ELR has a number of free or evaluation files available for downloading directly from our website. Please see www.elr.com.au/downloads.htm for specific details. For other supporting materials and documents available for free download, please see www.elr.com.au/support.htm.

  9. ELR 2020/2021 Calendar

  10. ELR Software offers free eLr tutorials over the web. We can provide this sort of support to individuals, or to groups who would like to have an overview of eLr. We are also offering free Coviu sessions to allow clinicians to get a feel for teletherapy, and in particular the advantages of using eLr for Coviu. Please contact us for details.
